When you have no clear commitment to or understanding of truth, grace becomes little more than justification for preference. We end up mistaking the freedom we have in Christ for license to do, or say, or be whatever we want.
Without grace, truth leads to judgmentalism and legalism. We start measuring people by our own standards and in effect start saying if you don’t look like me you don’t get it; or we get down on ourselves because we don’t match someone else’s expectations of us.

Awesome Dan. Such an issue, isn’t it? Love that Meme, as it really says it all. I struggle some, as given free rein, I would probably tend to be legalistic. But, that’s because I like rules and order, and did before I was ever saved. Tough subject, and requires a lot of prayer and discernment to know when to act and speak.

I think we each tend to gravitate more towards on or the other. The way I have come to see it is that I am to conduct myself in truth and I am to respond to others in grace.

Grace and truth. Sounds like a great blog name!
I go to church with a fellow, sort of been my mentor for these almost 9 years. He was saved at an early age, but fell out of church as an adult for years. He came back, with a vengeance. Rumored to have been extremely legalistic and made some mistakes in the grace department.
Now, he is as full of grace as any man I know and has served as a great example to me.

That’s awesome Wally. Sounds like a great mentor for you. I’m glad you’ve had that for almost 9 years. We need more guys who are full of both grace and truth.

Agreed Dan. He’s one of those special people to me. We are so different in a lot of ways. He is very, very country. I am quite city. He is very not intellectual, I love books. Now, don’t get me wrong, he is a studying machine. I wears jeans, I wear suits. It’s Mutt and Jeff. But we are a great team. We actually tag team a basic Bible Doctrine class together, and are visiting/witnessing partners. We all need somebody like that. It’s what makes this life worthwhile in a lot of ways.
