Me: Anna come here and wash my feet.
Anna: Um, no. I’m not Jesus.
Hmmm. Kudos on her quick witty retort to my tongue in cheek question. She made me laugh. It’s a good thing I wasn’t drinking any coffee at the time or things might have been messy.
The more I thought about it, the more interesting I thought her response was. She clearly identifies Jesus as being someone who would have said, “Sure, I’ll wash your feet.” But I have been learning that what makes things funny is when there is some amount of truth involved. In this case, the truth being that Jesus is the kind of guy who will wash feet. But there is also another implied truth: that you should not expect that anyone other than Jesus would. At least, I think that is there….and I do think that is true.
The irony is, the very thing the grace of the Father aims to do is to make us the sort of people who would be willing—even more than willing—to wash a person’s feet. That’s one of the things Jesus was getting at in John 13:13-17 (NIV),
“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
As CS Lewis put it in Mere Christianity, God is making us all into “little Christs.” The new life we have because of Jesus is the kind of life that makes us like Jesus. Not in the sense that we become the second Person of the Trinity, but in the sense that we share His character, passions, desires, and convictions. In short, as a Christian I should be the kind of person that is willing to wash another’s feet; and more than that, should be the kind of person that has the reputation with those that know me that I am such a person.
I’m not saying I am mind you, just that I should be that kind of person. That that is the kind of person God is making me to be. And if you are in Christ, the same is true for you.
Learning To Be Full Of Grace And Truth. 
This is really lovely. I think we are called to become little Christ’s, doing as He did.
Anna’s answer is really wise too, however. We ourselves can’t save anyone. So ,”I’m not Jesus. ” People already have a Savior, look to the One who said, “unless I wash you….” Pointing people to Jesus is exactly what we’re called to do! It’s a really good point for those who may be less bold or prone to sacrifice too much, to martyr themselves serving others. We aren’t Jesus. 🙂
