“Proclaim further: This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again comfort Zion and choose Jerusalem'(Zechariah 1:17, NIV).
What a wonderful thing to hear! After all the struggle, all the sin, all the rejection, all the trouble, all the discipline, and all the despair that comes from hearing God say three times in Jeremiah, do not pray for this people (Jeremiah 7:16, 11:14, and 14:11) because their sins were so chronic and so egregious that He decided to exile them from the land He had given them, God still loved them. They were still His choice. They were still His. That is so comforting.
God loves us because He choses to. Not because He has to. Not because we are good. But in spite of the fact that we are not. He chose to send Christ to redeem you. He didn’t have to. He didn’t need to. He chose to. The great news is that in spite of all our sin and messiness, God always choses His people. He will always save you. He will always comfort you. He will always come for you. And He will always bring you home.
