The Way Is a Person

You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:4-6, NIV).

When we think of how to get somewhere we want a map. We want a route to follow. We want directions. But when it comes to getting to the Father’s House (John 14:2) the way is not a road or a path but a Person. Jesus is the way to the Father.

Jesus has made a way to the Father that is found in being in a personal loving friendship with Him. Our part is to show that love in being obedient, in loving one another (John 13:35-35). That happens naturally when you love someone. We naturally want to please the people we love. He shows His love for us by joining us to Him through His Spirit who communicates both His love and the Father’s love to us (John 14:21) and teaches us how to love Him and one another (John 14:26), giving us His peace, and in preparing a place for us in the Father’s House which He will personally bring us to when it is ready (John 14:3).

But the way to the Father is in that relationship with Jesus.

It isn’t through accepting a certain theological creed. Sure, there are good ones and bad ones. And it behooves us to have a good one. But the way is not through any of them—even the best of them.

It isn’t through being religious, or moral, or following the Ten Commandments. Without that relationship with Jesus, all that means nothing. The way is not performance but Jesus.

The way to the Father is not in our intentions, no matter how good or sincere they may be. It is only through that friendship with Jesus.

The way is not a creed, or morality, or good intentions. The way is a Person.

      2. Maybe not mysterious, but very important to God’s work. I’ve not been called for that, just to teach and write and live a regular life. My stepson was called at 14 though and is in Seminary now. I guess that was my call was to be in his life when he got called and be there to keep him pointed in the right direction. I wrote a post about it once if you would like to read it.

        1. Thank you, I think I will. We are both spiritual fathers in the kingdom. A pastor is basically a spiritual father of a spiritual family (ie a local church). There is a lot of correlation between parenting pastoring, and discipleship.

          3. It’s ironic for many years I really thought preachers were pond scum even worse than the average Christian. And a Baptist preacher was the worst. Never say God has no sense of humor lol
