Lessons from Target

Yesterday, I took my daughter Anna to Target so she could use a gift card she had been given. It wasn’t long before it became clear that what really had her excited was not that she had a $10 gift card to spend, but that she got to spend time alone with her dad.

That reminded me just how precious a gift giving our time can be. You can always get more money. You can always get more stuff. But you can never get more time. Once it is spent, it is spent. There are no take-backs, do-overs, or returns. In a real sense, it is the most precious thing we have to give. If I bought that whole store, I don’t think it would have equaled the value she placed on getting a good chunk of my time for just her enjoyment and company.

If you are anything like me, there seems to be no problem in finding things to fill up our time. But if we find ourselves cringing when our family and loved ones ask us for time, it is a sign that we need to rethink how we are spending our time. Loving one another is the best use of our time. It is the number one reason God gives us the time we have. Is there someone you need to give some time to today? Make their day, give them some of your time. And I’ll bet you a $10 Target gift card that in doing so you will make your day too.

  1. Amen the gift of self is the most valuable we can give. To be present for someone else and really give them all of you. Very special indeed and I am sure Anna feels the same way.
