A Taste for Holiness

I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead (Philippians 3:10-11).

In Psalms 34:8 David invites us to taste and see that the LORD is good. David not only knew it was true that God is good, he experienced it with Him—he tasted it. Once you have a taste (a desire, attraction, or affection) for God’s holiness, more you want of it. This is what Paul was experiencing in Philippians 3:10-11.

Paul was not just talking about knowing about Christ, he wanted to know Him personally, relationally, intimately. This became so important to him that he says in Philippians 3:8, What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.

The more a person has a spiritual taste, the more he will love holiness and hate evil. This means that the more a person appreciates the beauty of holiness the more that person will want to be holy and not be sinful. As sanctification continues this taste or appreciation grows and drives the Christian toward God and holiness and away from sin.

How have you tasted that God is good?

What does it mean to be intimate with God?

How do you work to grow in your intimacy with God? What can you do to start?
