If You Are In Christ, God Is Not Angry With You

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation (Romans 5:9-11).

When Jonathan Edwards preached “Sinners In the Hands of an Angry God,” he was directing his message towards people who had not yet accepted Christ as their savior. His goal was to wake them up to the spiritual reality of their need for a savior and what was in store if they continued to pay no heed to the gospel message.

But things change once you are in Christ. All the wrath God had for your sins was spent in full on Christ when He was on the cross. Once you are in Christ, facing the wrath of God for any of your sins—past, present, or future—is something you never need to worry about again. The Father treated Christ like a lion in dealing with your sins so that He could treat you like a lamb in Christ. That sermon, that message, no longer applies to you. All the threats of God’s fierce anger for sin no longer apply to you who are in Christ.

God may still discipline us (Proverbs 3:12, Hebrews 12:4-11), but we should not confuse discipline with punishment. But as Paul teaches in Romans 5:9-11, our sins have been dealt with once and for all. God no longer relates to the Christian as a sinner, but as a saint and as a son or a daughter.
