Having Jesus’ Head and Heart

Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. Therefore I urge you to imitate me. For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church (1 Corinthians 4:15-17).

As Christians we need to be imitators of Christ in both doctrine and practice. This is a crucial truth we need to be learning if we want to be maturing in our walk with God. Scripture is very clear on this. The goal of learning the Scriptures and cultivating sound theology is so you can live a life of love. This is affirmed in the Great Commandment in Matthew 22:37-40 where Jesus says, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

Paul echoes Him in Romans 13:9-10, The commandments, “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Paul states it even more succinctly in Galatians 5:6 where he writes, The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

The aim of Scripture is love. If the knowledge we amass be it ever so great, be it ever so deep and searching, be it ever so esteemed, if it does not result in a life of love, you have nothing, you gain nothing.
