I promise you what I promised Moses: ‘Everywhere you go, you will be on land I have given you—from the Negev Desert in the south to the Lebanon mountains in the north, from the Euphrates River on the east to the Mediterranean Sea on the west, and all the land of the Hittites.’ No one will be able to stand their ground against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you (Joshua 1:3-5).
You have probably figured out by now that while God loves you so much, gives you so much, and excites you so much, that He does not take away your problems. Why is that?
God promised Joshua and Israel victory. But they still had to fight for it. They still had to go to war. God promises you victory. He promises to be with you. But you still have to fight. You still have to struggle. You still have to run the race. Why? Because God wants to build character in you.
What is character? Character is the proof, the worth, the evidence of your faith, trust, and dependence on God. How deep do your roots go? The only way to know is to test it. Not only that, but the only way to grow it is to test it. When you start doing the things God wants you doing there will inevitably be times when you feel like you are in over your head. You will be tempted to quit. When those times come God is working on your character. He wants to see, and more importantly He wants you to see, that you have the character to stick with it, to work through it, and to look to God for all you need to complete it.
